FRESNO, Calif. (CNN/KFSN) — A Fresno, Calif., fire captain is in critical condition after falling through the roof of a burning home.
Capt. Pete Dern was leading a crew to create ventilation Sunday afternoon when the home’s garage caved in.
Dern, a 25-year veteran of the force, suffered second- and third-degree burns on nearly 75 percent of his body.
“He is currently completing what we would refer to as the resuscitative phase of his care, where he’s received a large volume of intravenous fluids to prevent shock and, at this point, remain stable, albeit in very serious and essentially critical condition,” said Dr. William Dominic of Community Medical Centers.
“His family would like to thank everyone for the outpouring and for the outpouring of support and for the offers for help. If we can we’d like to cut down on the phone calls coming into the hospital because their switchboard is swamped,” said family spokesman Bob VanTassel.
It took 11 trucks and 31 firefighters to put out the fire.
The cause is under investigation, but the battalion chief says it doesn’t appear to have been intentionally set.
