A cat with Hawaii ties has truly earned the designation of “top cat,” at least when it comes to social media.
Nala is an official Guinness World Record title-holder with more than 3.5 million followers on Instagram.
She belongs to Shannon and Pookie Ellis. Pookie adopted Nala from a shelter in California, and Shannon — who’s from Hawaii — started following Nala on Instagram.
Not long after that, Shannon moved to the mainland to meet Nala and Pookie, and help Nala pursue her dreams.
While Nala’s Instagram fame has been fun, there’s also an important message — sharing the need to protect animals and the needs to adopt shelter animals.
“So we use her platform to spread awareness about adoption and anti-declawing, and different messages on how to properly care for your pet,” says Shannon. “Nala is also on the board of a nonprofit called Pet Education Project, so we also try to use her platform to teach kids on how to care for animals and how to be animal heroes.”
Shannon says Nala was one of the very first Instagram animals, and celebrated six years of Internet stardom on Monday.
She also says the cat has become so popular that managing her career is a fulltime job for both her a Pookie because they need to oversee her many public appearances and her online stardom.
Shannon says they donate some of the profit they make off Nala to a number of animal shelters on the mainland and to the Hawaiian Humane Society.
