Castle Medical Center’s parent company eyes Hawaii Island hospitals

News

Three financially strapped Hawaii Island hospitals may soon be in for a change.

Adventist Health, the parent company of Castle Medical Center, is looking into a partnership or potential purchase of Hilo Medical Center, Ka‘u Hospital and Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua.

According to Hawaii Health Systems Corp. East Hawaii Region, representatives will be touring all three facilities later this month.

“This is a very preliminary discussion to see if our two organizations have any possible, good possibility or good arrangements to have some sort of strategic alliance to looks for ways we can possibly work together,” said East Hawaii Regional CEO of Hawaii Health Systems Corporation Dan Brinkman. “We have no idea what the future will hold, but we felt that it was very important for us to be open to all our options and to have some conversations.”

The region faced a $7 million shortfall this year, which resulted in a roughly 7-percent reduction of its workforce.

Eighty-seven workers lost their jobs due to service cutbacks and service closures.
