For the second straight week, University of Hawai’i right-handed pitcher Tyler Brashears has drawn high praise for his performance on the mound, as officials from the Big West Conference announced on Monday that he has been named Big West Pitcher of the Week in consecutive weeks.
Brashears is just the second conference pitcher to repeat in back-to-back weeks for the award this season. Long Beach State’s Chris Mathewson was the previous repeat honoree, and also the opposing pitcher that Brashears defeated in a shutout pitching duel to win this week’s award.
The Lake Forest, California junior nearly mirrored his victory from the previous week over highly-touted UC Santa Barbara, going eight (8.0) scoreless innings against the Long Beach State 49ers-though they prefer Dirtbags. Against LBSU, he scattered four (4) hits, walked two (2) and fanned three (3) while extending his scoreless streak to 20.2 innings. He allowed only two LBSU batters to reach second base and none advanced to third, limiting the Dirtbags to just .154 hitting.
Brashears lowered his ERA to 1.78, placing him No. 3 in the Big West standings for the stat. He won his third straight decision and is now tied for second in the conference with seven victories.
After wrapping up the LBSU series, Brashears and the Rainbow Warriors remain on the road in advance of the UC Riverside series this weekend. The opening game versus the Highlanders is set for Thursday, May 7 in Riverside. The Highlanders (13-32, 2-13 Big West) dropped a series sweep last weekend to Cal State Fullerton and are on a five-game losing streak.
