Ask HPD: Is it illegal to park within T-type intersection?

News

Sharie Souza of the Honolulu Police Department Criminal Investigation Division will answer this week’s questions from a viewer.

Question: I received a parking ticket while parked within a “T” type intersection.  I’ve parked there for years.  There was no ‘DO NOT PARK’ sign posted and the sidewalk is not marked red.  Cars have been parking there for years.  Was my car parked illegally?

Answer: It is illegal to park within an intersection. The law does not require a sign to be posted.

Other common areas that don’t require ‘DO NOT PARK’ signs and are illegal to park are:

  • within 30 feet of a stop sign
  • on or within 20 feet of a crosswalk
  • within ten feet of a fire hydrant
  • in the turnaround area of any dead end street

The fine for parking in an intersection is $35.
