In Singapore it is officially Fight Night Friday as Mililani’s Angela Lee will make her third title defense as ONE atomeweight champion.
Lee will main event ONE Championship’s Unstoppable Dreams card against Mei Yamaguchi.
Back in 2016 Lee became the organization’s first female champion beating Yamaguchi by decision to claim the atomweight crown. Without debate though, the victory was the toughest fight of Lee’s career as she was knocked down and fought-off a deep armbar before bettering the Japanese fighter on the cards.
Two years later, despite having been victorious there appears to be a redemption factor in the mind of the champ.
“Sometimes people are saying yeah, it was a razor thin splits decision and I’m like, no! And that makes me kind of like even more motivated for Friday night because I’m going to go in there and I’m going to show everyone that it’s not even a contest.” Lee told KHON2 Sports Director Rob DeMello.
Entering the fight 8-0 Lee is a superstar in the asian mixed martial arts scene and there is no organization bigger than ONE Championship. With that popularity comes responsibilities. Between her training sessions this week her schedule of media interviews, appearances, and photo shoots are demanding, but do come with the benefits of having your image plastered on a wall or wrapped around a taxi.
“Sometimes it feels like the norm and then someone sends you something and you’re like wow, I can’t believe that’s me you know? I can’t believe I’m on the side of that building. It’s insane. Sometimes I feel like I live two split lives because in Hawaii everything is low-key but in Singapore it’s a big city and it’s bustling and everyone knows everything about you here so it’s crazy” said Lee.
That craziness is very much welcomed by the champ though, and she’s not ready to give it up.
“To maintain this is everything, but I know that on Friday night I’m going to hear and-still. I love it and I wouldn’t’t be here where I am without the kind of hard work it takes to maintain”
Serving as the co-main event will be Angela’s younger brother Christian Lee facing Martin Nguyen for the featherweight title.
If both Hawaii fighters are victorious, they would become the first brother-sister world champions in mixed martial arts history.
ONE Championship’s Unstoppable Dreams main card will begin at 2:30am HST. The event will be live and free of charge via the ONE Championship app.
