7-year-old hula dancer wins title and the hearts of viewers across Hawaii

Rhyan Faith Ano’i Demello, 7, was crowned Miss Keiki Hula 2018 this weekend at the E Malama Mau I Ka Hula Festival in Hilo.

The video of her dance that won her the title has over 97,000 views on Facebook.

“I was so happy that they cheered for me,” said Rhyan Faith Ano’i Demello, also known as “Hunnay”, on what she was feeling when she heard the cheers from the stands. She danced the hula ʻauana.

Demello has been a student at Halau E Hulali Mai I Ka La for the past two years.

Her kumu is Chrissy Noelani Kama Henriques.

“I was just in awe of her winning. She just worked so hard and just watching all the comments that came through,” said Henriques.

They also have a message to everyone who watched and commented on the video.

“We just want to thank everyone for taking the time to watch Hunnay’s performance. We appreciate all the comments,” said Henriques.

Henriques says Demello one day hopes to become Miss Aloha Hula.
