Wild weather hits the state Friday

Local News

It was another day of wild weather for the state Friday.

Unstable weather provided ideal conditions for a funnel cloud to form over Oahu Friday. A viewer snapped a photo of one forming over Kapolei from his location in Pearl City.

A funnel cloud is a tornado that doesn’t touch the ground. It usually forms in the afternoon with the right weather conditions. The ground has to be sufficiently heated, so twisters are common in the afternoon hours when the sun has been baking the land, and when winds are light. Twisters also generally form over flat land.

As the weather slowly clears and stabilizes over the weekend, there will be a lesser chance of any more popping up, but funnel clouds are always an interesting phenomenon over Hawaii’s skies.
