A warning from the Honolulu Fire Department.

Someone is calling local residents, claiming to be from the department and requesting an appointment to inspect the home or smoke alarms.

These calls are a scam, fire officials say, and the police have been notified.

The fire department believes these callers are trying to gain access to your home.

If you receive a call, immediately call 911 or the HFD at 723-7151.

Anyone with information or knowledge of this scam is asked to contact HPD or CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.

HFD provides smoke alarms through the Smoke Alarms For Everyone (SAFE) program, a free service that installs smoke alarms in local residents’ homes. However, residents sign up for free smoke alarms at community events where they can speak with firefighters.

The department does not conduct a phone campaign to solicit participation for the SAFE program or any other program.

HFD personnel who install smoke alarms will always be in uniform with proper identification.
