It’s important to know, and see, just how quickly a flash flood can occur.
Honokaa resident Jeri Moniz shared video of the gulch behind her home on Monday afternoon, Aug. 17.
The gulch, which was initially dry, got flooded with water within seconds. “I heard the roar before I saw the water,” she said.
Moniz says it doesn’t happen very often, but she is constantly warning her kids to be careful. “It shows you don’t have much time when flash floods happen.”
Then on Thursday, Aug. 20, Danae Ah Nee shared video of water and mud gushing over Kula Highway near Sun Yat Sen Park.
The road remained closed until water levels subsided. Luckily no one was hurt.
