HONOLULU (KHON2) — A United Airlines flight headed to Newark circled offshore Oahu for a couple of hours due to a mechanical issue.
A Hawaii Department of Transportation spokesperson confirmed that the Boeing 767 aircraft was burning off fuel in order to get to a certain weight so that it was safe for the plane to land. The spokesperson emphasized that it was not an emergency situation.
United Airlines said on Wednesday that the aircraft encountered a possible fuel pump issue shortly after take-off at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
According to FlightAware, the plane landed in Honolulu at around 6:30 p.m.
United was working to get customers on other flights.
