UH Manoa dorm mailroom burglarized by thief

Package thieves strike again, this time at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

The university says the incident happened two weeks ago, before Thanksgiving break. Students say that several packages were stolen from the mailroom of the Wainani dorms.

UH Manoa student Julia De Jong was one of the people who had her package stolen.

“I know my mom sent it cause she got a confirmation that it was sent and everything. The tracking number said it was confirmed, that it was signed in and good to go,” said Julia De Jong.

“Tuesday, around 7 p.m. I come in and I’m like, ‘I’m here to pick up my package,’ and they’re like, ‘we can’t find it.'”

She says she went back to the mailroom and asked about the package the next few days.

Then on Friday UH sent out an e-mail saying the mailroom was burglarized on November 20th.

“I I was kind of preparing myself for that because it had been a week and a half and I had heard nothing from them saying oh yeah we had found your package,” said De Jong.

Julia has filed a claim in hopes of getting reimbursed for her stolen package.

A spokesman for UH confirms that they’ve since strengthened security at Wainani.

However, students say they’re still worried.

“When I first saw the email, I was really concerned because I know I had a lot of mail coming in and a lot of mail coming out, and some Christmas presents from my family. I wasn’t sure, like maybe they were my packages,” said student Lindsey Halverson.

“All I can say is you don’t want to steal other people’s mail. People are waiting for that support from their families especially us students here in college you know,” said student Ielu Acosta.

The Honolulu Police Department is currently investigating the theft.

If you have any information that can help police, they are asking that you contact the HPD or the UH Department of Public Safety at (808) 956-6911.
