The Maui Police Dept. reports that a truck driver died from injuries from a crash on Honoapiilani Highway at the intersection of N. Kihei Road Sunday morning.
At approximately 03:04 a.m., the crash occurred as a silver 2003 Nissan Frontier pickup truck, traveling north on the highway within the outer lane, veered off the road, striking a raised curb, then hitting a traffic signal pole.
The vehicle then continued north where it struck another raised curb and hit a second traffic signal pole.
The operator of the Nissan truck was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical life-threatening condition where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The front seat passenger of the pickup truck, a 26-year-old man from Paia, sustained minor injuries and was also transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.
The operator of the Nissan truck has been identified, following the notification of next of kin, as Ilya Romanovich Vinokur, 37, of Paia.
Preliminary investigation revealed the operator was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. The front seat passenger was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.
This is Maui County’s fourth traffic fatality for 2016 as compared to no fatalities at this time last year.
