Tropical cyclone activity ramps up in the East Pacific

HONOLULU – (KHON2) Tropical Storm Erick has formed in the East Pacific and is expected to strengthen. Maximum sustained winds remain near 40 mph with higher gusts. The system could strengthen to a hurricane by Tuesday.

Another area of thunderstorm activity father east of Tropical Storm Erick also has the potential to become a named system…potentially Flossie.

This area of low pressure accompanied by disturbed weather is located a few hundred miles south of Acapulco, Mexico.

Conditions are favorable for development, and a tropical depression is expected to form early next week while the system moves generally westward at 15 to 20 mph.

Heavy rain possible for the islands starting late Sunday

HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Although mostly dry conditions will continue into the weekend, a few showers near and along a diminishing front will remain possible around Kauai through the day Saturday.

Rainfall chances will quickly rise through the day Sunday as the winds shift out of the south to southwest ahead of a stronger cold front approaching. This front will quickly advance down the island chain Sunday night, then stall around the Big Island Monday through Tuesday.

Maui Mayor Victorino’s rule changes start Tuesday, what people can expect

HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Hawaii Gov. David Ige approved Maui County Mayor Mike Victorino’s request to modify retail store capacity and to require travelers to download the "Aloha Safe Alert" app. The changes will take effect on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Both big-box stores and smaller retailers will need to limit their capacity to 30%. If the maximum capacity of a store is under 50, however, they will need to calculate how many people can be inside based on its size.
