Transformer explosion closes Hobron Lane in Waikiki

Honolulu police have closed Hobron Lane in Waikiki in both directions from Ala Moana Blvd. to Kaioo Drive due to a transformer that exploded.

The incident happened at around 5 p.m. Sunday.

Hawaiian Electric crews are on the scene to investigate.

Witnesses told KHON2 the loud blast shook buildings and brought clouds of dust into the air.

Police and fire department also reported of a call of a dumpster fire in the same area around 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The incidents did not cause any injuries, and no word if the two cases are connected.
