To think it all came crashing down with a report of a stolen mailbox in 2013 that would later spark investigations into former Deputy Prosecutor Katherine Kealoha and her husband, former Chief of Police, Louis Kealoha.
It’s a tanlged web that continues to branch out ensnaring more and more people with each passing month.
Now, six years after the saga began, new allegations continue to arise.
Court documents show the alleged criminal activity goes back as far as 2004, but the straw that broke the camel’s back was the mailbox theft on June 21-22, 2013.
Gerard Puana, Katherine Kealoha’s uncle, was charged in connection with the case.
By December of 2014 the FBI was called to investigate alleged corruption at HPD stemming from the mailbox theft, and the case against Puana ended in a mistrial after Louis Kealoha, who was still the HPD Chief of Police at the time, misstated, in court, that Puana was convicted of burglary.
Then in October 2017, a 20 count indictment was filed against the Kealohas, including allegations of corruption and fraud.
Several months later new charges were filed including obstruction of justice against Katherine Kealoha.
Then in July 2018, yet another bombshell. Hawaii firefighter Jess Ebersole plead guilty to conspiracy, claiming Katherine Kealoha, whom he had an affair with, told him to lie to the grand jury.
Two months later, Katherine Kealoha resigned as deputy prosecutor.
Last October, as the trial date drew near, a judge granted Katherine Kealoha’s request to delay her trial due to an unspecified medical condition.
And finally, today, a 54 count indictment, alledging Katherine Kealoha and her brother, Rudolph Puana, sold drugs.
