Teen visitor rescued after fall from Maui trail

Local News

A visiting teenage boy was airlifted Sunday morning after falling from the Bamboo Forest trail in the Kailua area of east Maui.

At 11:08 a.m., firefighters from Paia and Kahului were called to the trail on a report that a 13-year-old male was injured in a fall.

A Kahului rescue crew aboard the Air 1 helicopter located the boy at about 11:45, at the base of the second waterfall on the Bamboo Forest trail.

Despite falling nearly 15 feet onto the jagged rocks below the waterfall, the boy was found in good condition with his parents at his side. He was conscious and speaking, but sustained moderate injuries.

Rescue crews put the boy in a transport basket and airlifted him to an open pasture near Hana Highway, where he was treated by paramedics and later transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

The boy and other family members were being escorted by a tour guide when the accident occurred. They were visiting from Chattanooga, Tennessee.
