Two suspects in a deadly beating investigation appeared in court Tuesday on second-degree murder charges.
Nicholas Payne and Chu Lun Aiona are accused of beating a man to death in an abandoned building off Kapiolani Boulevard.
The male victim was discovered on Tuesday, Aug. 28, at around 4:15 a.m., near a bus stop by the Hawaii Convention Center on Kapiolani Boulevard and Atkinson Drive. According to court documents, he was lying on the ground, unconscious with no pulse, and appeared to be bleeding from his face and head.
He was taken to the hospital in critical condition where he died.
Court documents say several witnesses told police the victim had been beaten in an abandoned building directly behind the bus stop. A witness said she saw two men, later identified as Payne and Aiona, punch and kick the victim for at least 30 minutes while he pleaded for his life.
A medical examiner confirmed he died from a blunt force head injury.
Aiona turned himself into police the following day, Wednesday, Aug. 29, at around 12:30 p.m.
Payne was already in custody for an outstanding contempt warrant.
Both remain in custody, unable to post $1 million bail.
