A man arrested in connection with a fatal Halloween assault has been charged in the victim’s death.
Kallen Imade, 31, of Mountain View, was charged with manslaughter Wednesday night. His bail was set at $250,000.
On Saturday, Oct. 31, at 11:30 p.m., South Hilo Patrol officers responded to a report of an unconscious man in a parking lot on the 100 block of Hema Street.
A police report stated that Imade went to residence of Alfred Vea, 49, of Hilo, to contact his ex-girlfriend that was at Vea’s residence at the time. Imade yelled for her and Vea went out to speak with him. Vea’s 9-year-old daughter then saw Imade and her father get into a tussle, and then saw her father fall backwards down a embankment and strike the back of his head on the ground of the parking lot.
She saw Imade walk away, and when she checked on her father, he was unconscious.
Vea’s daughter identified Imade in a photo lineup.
Vea was taken to Hilo Medical Center with a head injury and later transferred to Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition with a cracked skull and bleeding in the brain.
He was pronounced dead on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 10:34 a.m. The case was reclassified to a second-degree murder.
Imade turned himself into police Tuesday morning, Nov. 3, and was initially arrested on suspicion of assault.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office is scheduled to conduct an autopsy Thursday, Nov. 5, to determine the exact cause of death.
Police ask anyone who witnessed this incident and who has not spoken to police to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311 or contact Detective Grant Todd at 961-2385 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
