The City and County of Honolulu is opening the wait list for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program.
“We recognize the need for rental assistance is great, and that families are anxious to apply,” Community Services Director Pam Witty-Oakland said. “With the online application system, applying is quick, easy and free. There is never a charge to apply for Section 8 housing assistance, so avoid the scam of people offering to help you apply for a fee.”
Online applications will be accepted from 7:45 a.m. on June 4, through 4:30 p.m. on June 8.
The city says the online application system provides the applicant with a receipt and is accessible at all times during the designated period.
Officials say this method provides equal opportunity for everyone to apply without a first-come, first-served advantage.
Only one application per household will be accepted.
For those without computer access, a terminal is available during normal business hours, 7:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Section 8 offices at 842 Bethel Street and Kapolei Hale.
In addition, a number of nonprofit agencies will assist applicants by providing access to terminals during certain hours.
After the closing date, only a predetermined number of applications will be randomly selected and placed onto the wait list.
The selected families will be notified by email or regular mail.
The random selection process and shorter list will ensure that contact information is current and also provide more frequent opportunities for families to apply.
The city closed its wait list on May 21, 2014 when over 14,000 families submitted an online pre-application.
Out of that number, 3,100 randomly selected applicants were placed on the wait list at that time.
