Rain, wind and even snow impact neighbor islands

Local News

No island has been spared the impact of these very strong winds from this February storm.

On Kauai, a live wire down in Princeville on Sunday was one of many across the island. Add to that fallen trees in Kapa’a and on Menehune Road in Waimea.

There were many power outages and crews asked for patience because of the large volume of calls and continued strong winds.

Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami urged everyone to stay off the roads if possible.

On Maui, officials said several boats, broke free and were off Maalaea, west and south Maui. That included one that ran aground at Kamaole Beach Park, one in Kihei, and one in Lahaina at Front Street and Fleming Road.

Although there was some rain, officials said there were many calls of wind knocking down trees and power lines causing road closures and many power outages county wide.

The Department of Water Supply advised all Maui customers to conserve water until Monday as water storage tank levels dropped and pumps to refill them can’t run until power is restored. Once power is restored, water levels should return to normal levels.

There was also snow today in Polipoli on the Southeastern slope of Haleakala. State officials said this may be the first time ever snow has falled on a Hawaii State Park and it may be the lowest elevation of snow recorded in the state. Today’s snowfall was at the 6,200 foot elevation level.

Maui Electric said Sunday night customers in the Olinda and Piiholo areas and parts of Haiku should prepare for an extended outage, possibly overnight. There are a lot of trees to clear, plus the weather is slowing replacement of downed utility poles.

On Hawaii Island, Hawaii Electric Light Company said residents should be prepared for extended periods of power outages because of the weather.

Officials also said Bayfront Highway in Hilo may be closed until Wednesday.
