Honolulu’s rail project has reached yet another milestone.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday for rail’s first station, the West Loch Station.

It’s located at the intersection of Farrington Highway and Leoku Street, near Don Quijote in Waipahu.

The controversial project has had some setbacks, but is moving forward with seven miles of the elevated guideway already built.

“It’s been a difficult, difficult, difficult journey, the largest construction project in the history of this place. Going through the dense urban core of our city, going through places like this, a lot of challenges and disruption, but as I tell folks, it’s absolutely worth fighting for,” said Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell.

The initial section of the rail, from Kapolei to Aloha Stadium, is slated to open in 2018.
