The Hawaii Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting to discuss its application for a noise variance permit to perform construction work during overnight hours in Nanakuli.

The permit, which was submitted to the state Department of Health, is related to the Farrington Highway Intersection Improvements project.

If approved, the nighttime work is anticipated to alleviate the area’s construction-related traffic during daytime hours.

The meeting is scheduled at the following location and time and public comments will be accepted.

  • Wednesday, Mar. 4, 6-8 p.m. at Nanaikapono Elementary School, 89-153 Mano Avenue, Waianae

The meeting will be an open house format with a presentation, exhibits and a noise specialist available to answer public questions.

Project improvements will include roadway widening for the installation of a new auxiliary median turn lane, utility upgrades and a shared pedestrian and bicycle pathway between the Nanakuli Stream and Helelua Street.

The auxiliary turn lane is expected to improve traffic by removing turning vehicles from the regular travel lanes, especially during morning rush-hours when additional vehicles turn mauka-bound towards Nanakuli High and Intermediate Schools.
