Hundreds of residents on Hawaiian Homelands are without phone and internet service as Hurricane Lane threatens the state.

According to the Public Utilities Commission, around 10 p.m. Monday, a contractor doing road work on Farrington Highway in the Nanakuli area accidentally cut conduits and fiber optic cables belonging to Sandwich Isles Communications.

Sandwich Isles Communications services DHHL properties and offices.

Because of that, KHON2’s attempts to contact DHHL by phone have been unsuccessful.

A post on department’s website reads: “Some DHHL offices and Homestead Communities are experiencing a telecommunications outage from Sandwich Isles Communications (SIC).  SIC is working to resolve the problem and we hope to have service restored soon.  We apologize for this inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding.”

The PUC says there is no estimate of when customer service can be fully restored given the impending weather and the work involved.

Another added challenge is that because of traffic considerations, repair work can only be done between 8:30 p.m. and 3 a.m.
