No tsunami threat to Hawaii after 7.5 magnitude hits near Papua New Guinea

A powerful earthquake has struck Papua New Guinea.

It has triggered a tsunami alert for both Papua New Guinea and the nearby Solomon Islands, but so far no tsunami watches or warnings have been issued for Hawaii.

The 7.5 magnitude quake was centered about 30 miles northeast of Kokopo.
