More homeowners may soon be able to extend their properties

The city is hoping more residents themselves can get into the affordable housing business.

An estimated 105,000 households could soon be allowed to build backyard or second-story-additions they could rent out, called A.D.U’s or accessory dwelling units.

“If we’ve got one silver bullet in the whole island-wide strategy, it’s really the accessory dwelling units. The person who lives there — owns the building — is the one who is renting it. So it is well maintained, well managed, and it helps the owner provide some income on their mortgage,” said Harrison Rue of the Community Building, Transit Oriented Development.

The bill is up for a hearing at the City Council zoning committee Thursday.
