She represented District 13 (Haiku, Hana, Kaupo, Kipahulu, Nahiku, Paia, Kahoolawe, Molokini, Lanai, Molokai, Molokini) before stepping down on Feb. 1 due to complications from previous cancer treatments.
Her family released the following statement:
“Our family has been overwhelmed by and deeply appreciates all of the messages of Aloha that have been sent since Mele’s passing.
It is nice to know how much everyone out there cared for and appreciated Mele. She was truly dedicated to her constituents and would do anything to help others. We all knew how dedicated she was, and it is heartwarming to see it acknowledged.
We all miss her terribly. Our hope is that we can all continue to honor her by showing our service, dedication and commitment to our communities.
A deep MAHALO from our hearts.”
