Mauna Loa under observation after increase in seismic activity

Local News

Scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory say they are keeping a closer eye on Mauna Loa after signs that it is becoming a little more active.

Right now the alert level is at “Normal,” but there is discussion about possibly raising the level to “Advisory.”

An increase in seismicity near the summit of Mauna Loa, and an increased rate of deformation led scientists to think about making the change.

They also emphasize no imminent threat of an eruption, but those who live near the volcano should be aware of the situation.
