The Ewa Beach man who fell to his death from the H-1 Freeway earlier this month was high on crystal methamphetamine.

That’s according to the Honolulu medical examiner’s toxicology report on Pernell Aio, 37.

On March 1, Aio was being taken to the hospital in a police car when he got out of his handcuffs, kicked out one of the car’s windows, jumped off the freeway and died.

The medical examiner said Aio had enough crystal methamphetamine in his bloodstream, 450 nanograms per milliliter, to make him violent and hallucinate.

His cause of death is pending.

The incident prompted Honolulu police to review their procedures.
