A man who escaped Waiawa Correctional Facility and attacked a visitor last year was sentenced Tuesday.
Kamaka Villegas was one of three men who scaled a fence at the facility last April. They were discovered missing during a nightly headcount.
He and fellow escapee Kekoa Aspera were at Kailua Beach when Villegas punched a visitor, Gizelle D’Souza, multiple times in the face and took her belongings.
She had to undergo emergency surgery with a fractured eye socket and jaw.
Police say Villegas and Aspera took off in a stolen vehicle that officers tracked to Waimanalo.
The men crashed the vehicle, took off on foot, and were quickly caught.
During his arrest, KHON2 asked Villegas why he did it. “Stupidity,” Villegas replied. “I’m sorry.”
Villegas ended up pleading guilty to escape, robbery, and car theft.
He received sentences of 10, 20, and one year for each count, which will run concurrently after he serves sentences in other unrelated cases.
He will also need to pay D’Souza back for the stolen property and other fees.
