A man who escaped from police custody Friday night is still at large.
Saimone Mafi Jr., 27, got away from police near downtown Honolulu at around 8 p.m. He was last seen on foot crossing Vineyard Boulevard toward Pele Street.
He had been arrested Friday morning in Pearl City for resisting arrest and three warrants, totaling $60,000.
He was being transported to Queen’s Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries when he made his break.
According to the Honolulu Police Department, one officer was with Mafi when he escaped, and immediately notified dispatch. Officers in the area were notified, and an island-wide APB was issued.
An internal investigation has been opened to determine what happened.
As for whether Mafi was in handcuffs, a department spokeswoman responded: “This is part of the investigation. We can’t comment on this specific incident because it’s under investigation, but the department policy is that arrestees are generally handcuffed behind their backs. However, there may be certain circumstances where this is impractical or could potentially harm the person being arrested. This could include persons who are injured, extremely frail, or have physical limitations or disabilities.”
As of Monday, police have yet to find him. Officers are currently searching areas where Mafi is known to frequent.
HPD says the officer who was with Mafi has been with the department for five years.
Meanwhile, neighborhood residents wondered how something like this could happen.
Randy Borona has lived on the corner of Vineyard Boulevard and Pele Street for the past 26 years. Living near downtown, he says he’s used to hearing police sirens, but knew last night not to come out of his apartment.
“If he was going to come up, it’s not like I was going to answer the door anyway,” Borona said.
We did some digging into Mafi’s past and found prior convictions for assaulting an officer and car theft. We even featured him on Hawaii’s Most Wanted back in 2013.
Mafi is described to be 5 feet 8 inches tall and 170 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a red tank top, black shorts and black socks.
