Man dies in hospital after reported Kaneohe Bay Sandbar drowning

The man who died following an apparent drowning at the Kaneohe Bay Sandbar on Saturday has been identified.

He was Thomas Zelko, 56, of Kailua.

According to the Honolulu Fire Department, Zelko got into trouble a little before 4:30 p.m.

He was brought by boat from the sandbar to the Heeia Boat Ramp where Emergency Medical Services then transported him to the Castle Medical Center in “extremely” critical condition.

Zelko was pronounced dead at 5:12 p.m.
