Man dead, woman serious after double pedestrian accident in Maili

Honolulu police say two pedestrians were hit in West Oahu on Friday night.

It happened on Farrington Highway near Maliona Street in Maili at around 6:40 p.m.

Police say a man and woman were crossing Farrington Highway in front of the Maili pink market when a vehicle going westbound hit them.

The 29-year-old man was pushed into the eastbound lanes and that’s when another vehicle hit him.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital. The medical examiner has idenfied him as 29-year-old Juan Aldeguer.

The woman, 19, was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Police say the pedestrians were in a marked crosswalk.

“The drivers both did stop,” Lt. James Slayter of the Honolulu Police Department said.  “The first vehicle that was involved in the impact did pull a little bit further ahead because some bystanders seemed to be trying to attack the vehicle.”

Lt. Slayter said the second vehicle that hit the man in the eastbound lanes was being driven by a tourist from Japan.

Police closed all westbound lanes of Farrington Highway and one eastbound lane during their investigation.

All lanes reopened around 9:30 p.m.
