Man charged in Kunia auto theft

Local News

Pekelo Sanchez has been charged with crimes stemming from an auto theft that found Honolulu police pursuing him Sunday in Kunia.

Sanchez, 32, of no local address, was charged Monday with bail set at $35,000.

The incident started as a traffic violation at the Kunia Walmart. Police pulled over Sanchez for a seat belt violation and the Jeep he was driving was missing a front license plate.

After driving away, the police continued to follow the Jeep to a field in Kunia where the vehicle was abandoned, but not before crashing into a fence as Sanchez attempted to get on to some farm land.

What started as a pursuit on foot turned in to a joint effort by K-9 units and police helicopters to try to locate Sanchez.

About two-and-a-half-hours later, he was subsequently found hiding in farm land a few hundred yards from where he abandoned the Jeep.
