Madame Pele helps light the way for Special Olympics Hawaii

Madame Pele is helping to light the way for a Special Olympics Hawaii.

Lava from Kilauea on the Big Island was used to light the Flame of Hope.

Over the next month, this flame will make an appearance on each island:

Saturday, April 14:      Maui Law Enforcement Torch Run
Saturday, April 14:      East Hawaii Law Enforcement Torch Run
Saturday, April 21:      Kauai Law Enforcement Torch Run
Saturday, April 21:      West Hawaii Law Enforcement Torch Run
Saturday, April 21:      Molokai Law Enforcement Torch Run
Friday, May 25:            First Hawaiian Bank Troy Barboza Law Enforcement Torch Run 

The U.S. Coast Guard will help transport the fire which will be preserved in miner’s lamps.

“This torch lighting is a special way for us to honor the 50 years Special Olympics has helped bring intellectual disabilities out of the darkness and into the light, creating a community of understanding and respect,” said Cindy Ujimori, Special Olympics Hawaii vice president of community outreach.
