M6.8 earthquake strikes of Loyalty Islands; No tsunami threat to Hawaii

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 occurred southeast of the Loyalty Islands.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says that based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.

However, small tsunami waves have been observed close the epicenter. People along coastal areas near the earthquake should be observant and exercise normal caution.

BASED ON ALL AVAILABLE DATA A DESTRUCTIVE PACIFIC-WIDE TSUNAMI IS NOT EXPECTED AND THERE IS NO TSUNAMI THREAT TO HAWAII. REPEAT. A DESTRUCTIVE PACIFIC-WIDE TSUNAMI IS NOT EXPECTED AND THERE IS NO TSUNAMI THREAT TO HAWAII.
