The Lanai Planning Commission made history by changing the boundary for the entire island.

The commission worked with the planning department to revise the island’s special management area boundary.

It now includes protection for additional sites and features within the coastal zone.

Anyone who wants to build within this new boundary would have to get a special permit.

This is the first island-wide boundary change in the state since the S.M.A. boundaries were adopted in the 1970s.
