The Maui Police Dept. reports Monday that a Kihei man has been arrested and charged with robbery, burglary and unauthorized control of a motor vehicle.
At about 10:40 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, the victim left her residence in Kihei and returned home a few hours later.
As the victim was walking towards her house, she heard a family member screaming from the back cottage. The victim saw a male suspect running away from the cottage toward her van.
The suspect, identified as Nicholas Neely, 36, of Kihei, got into the victim’s van and started to drive away.
The victim reached into the van and was able to stop the vehicle by grabbing the gear shift lever. Neely tried to strike the victim with a baseball bat when she reached into the vehicle.
A neighbor assisted in detaining Neely before the police could arrive.
He was placed under arrest and charged for the aforementioned offenses.
Neely’s bail has been set at $16,000.
