Kauai officials investigating fire at old Kekaha sugar mill

Local News

A fire that broke out on the grounds of the old Kekaha Sugar Mill Sunday night left an unoccupied structure destroyed and caused roughly $50,000 in damage.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters from the Waimea, Hanapepe, and Lihue stations along with Rescue 3 personnel and the on-duty Battalion Chief worked together to contain the blaze along Kekaha Road that was reported around 8 p.m. Sunday.

Police officers from the Waimea station also responded to the scene, and closed a portion of Kekaha Road for about three hours.

Once on scene, firefighters contained the blaze within a half an hour and successfully prevented flames from spreading to other structures or brush areas nearby. During their response, firefighters also moved a collapsed metal roof in order to address multiple fires hidden underneath.

The fire was extinguished at approximately 9 p.m. and the scene was cleared by 11:30 p.m.

Fire inspectors estimate the cost of damage to the structure and its contents to be roughly $50,000.

Inspectors and Kauai police continue to investigate the cause of the fire. Anyone with information is urged to call Police Dispatch at 241-1711. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers Kaua‘i, at 246-8300.
