Kapaa Quarry Road and Mokapu Saddle Road have been reopened after being closed Tuesday after a hazardous chemical spill.
At 3:22 p.m., Honolulu firefighters responded to a chemical spill near the roads’ intersection that included a hazardous material unit.
The first HFD unit arrived at 3:27 p.m. to find that a flat-bed truck had dropped a pallet of swimming pool supplies, spilling approximately eight gallons of muriatic acid.
HFD personnel established command, isolated the area, and notified the State Department of Health Hazard Evaluation and Emergency Response Office.
The spill was contained and cleaned, utilizing soda ash, by 3:44 p.m.
The 21 year-old driver was evaluated by EMS personnel and refused further treatment. No injuries were reported.
No evacuations were called for and a safety assessment was done by the Department of Transportation and a City road crew.
