Japanese festival honors children, traditions

Local News

The 2nd annual Aki Matsuri: Celebrating Children and Culture was held on a rainy Sunday at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii in Moiliili.

The fall festival honors Hawaii’s children and traditions brought by Japanese immigrants to Hawaii by commemorating the Japanese traditions of Bunka no Hi or “Culture Day” and Shichi Go San or “Seven, Five, Three Festival.”

Children dressed up in elegant kimono and zori (sandals) and were blessed for a safe and healthy future.

Festival goers learned about Japanese traditions, arts and crafts and enjoyed a variety of foods and hands-on activities.
