Iolani School has canceled its scheduled orchestra performances in New York City and Rome during the holiday break.

The school said high-level government and law enforcement alerts raised concerns for the safety and welfare of students.

It released the following statement:

“Concerns began following the terrorist attack in Paris on November 13 and escalated when the U.S. State Department issued a worldwide travel alert for Americans. The FBI also released specific cautions regarding travel to destinations that were on the school trip’s itinerary. The cancellation is understandably disappointing and a lost opportunity for many students, families and teachers, but the school has made the decision to make safety the priority for all. Some families may still make the individual choice to take the trip as a personal vacation. The school is doing everything possible to mitigate the financial loss to families who will not take the trip.”
