Honolulu police and the state Department of Public Safety are investigating an alleged assault at Oahu Community Correctional Center.
It happened at around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 17.
Public safety officials said a 41-year-old inmate was assaulted by other inmates and sustained injuries to his head, torso and leg.
Honolulu police said the victim was physically confronted and the suspect “used a dangerous instrument” to cause the injuries.
The inmate was immediately assessed by the medical unit, transported to Queen’s Medical Center for follow-up treatment and returned to OCCC by 4 p.m.
Police have opened a second-degree attempted murder investigation. No arrests have been made.
The inmate is currently housed in a different module.
