Ice Palace Hawaii has begun 2015 with a new look.
Solar panels are now installed on the roof of the skating rink, located at Stadium Mall Shopping Center in Aiea.
The 162-kW photovoltaic system was installed by Distributed Energy Partners and is expected to save the facility nearly $70,000 a year.
“Our energy bill has been reduced by about 25 percent, which is a tremendous savings in maintaining an ice rink,” said Ice Palace Hawaii owner Doug Taylor. “We have also invested in LED lightings to maximize our savings and further reduce our carbon footprint.”
“Ice Palace is one of Oahu’s most recognized family attractions, and it is great to see them setting a positive great example for both kamaaina and visitors,” said John Cheever, DEP’s senior renewable energy developer.
Solar panels cover roughly 9,000 square feet of the facility’s roof and is expected to prevent the import of more than 20,000 barrels over the 30-year life span of the system.
