HONOLULU (KHON2) — When it comes to your average income, regional differences can vary significantly. While some states with higher costs also have higher wages, there are other places that aren’t considered expensive to live, like Minnesota, that still have higher wages.

Using the five-year estimates from the 2020 American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, finance publication GOBankingRates determined each state’s mean or “average” income. The same data was used to find the median household income for each state. Can you guess what it is in Hawaii?

By understanding what your average income is in your state, you can get a sense of where your own salary falls.

GOBankingRates explains the difference like this: Mean or “average” income takes the total amount of earnings across a sample and divides it by the number of participants. This is different from the median income, which is the midway point of a sample.
