A family has been displaced after a fire destroyed their Oma‘o home on Tuesday afternoon.
The family was not present at the time and no injuries were reported.
Kaumualii Highway, from Oma‘o Road to Koloa Road, was closed from approximately 3:20 to 6:20 p.m. as firefighters responded to the fire, according to Kauai Police Department dispatch.
Kalaheo firefighters were dispatched to the scene at approximately 3 p.m. and found a two-story dwelling fully engulfed in flames.
In total, nine units and 22 personnel from the Kalaheo, Hanapepe, and Lihue fire stations along with the on-duty Battalion Chief, the KFD Prevention Bureau, and the Kauai Police Department responded to the incident.
The fire was deemed under control at approximately 3:50 p.m., fully extinguished at 6:30 p.m., and the scene was cleared by fire officials shortly before 7:40 p.m.
The dwelling did not appear to have residential fire sprinklers, and the fire remains under investigation.
Fire inspectors consider the home a total loss and estimated damages to the structure and its contents to be roughly $650,000.
Volunteers with the American Red Cross assisted the family.
