Cyclone Pam is tracking towards New Zealand. The voyaging canoe Hokulea is currently docked in Auckland, New Zealand.

Hokulea officials tell us it’s pretty protected.

KHON2 talked to Polynesian Voyaging Society president Nainoa Thompson to find out how the Hokulea is prepared for the possible impact of the cyclone.

“We may push the schedule back which is problematic because Hokulea needs to go all the way from New Zealand and get all the way through Germany and Australia before the next hurricane season starts,” he said.

Thompson says if the Hokule’a were to be hit by a storm while at sea, all you can really do is strap yourself in a harnesses, and keep the water out. He says in terms of sailing or maneuvering, he says you are simply at the fate of the storm.
