‘Historic’ monkeypod tree falls on parked cars in Punahou

Local News

A massive tree fell and landed on several cars in a parking lot Wednesday morning.

The incident was reported at around 6:30 a.m. at 1434 Punahou Street.

Witnesses say a tree from First Church Christ Scientist property fell and landed on three cars at Arcadia Retirement Residence.

No one was hurt, but the incident caused quite a scare.

“We were in my office actually around 6:45 this morning and we heard a loud crack and a loud noise, so we immediately went out to address the situation,” said Arcadia COO Karen Thorp.

“I was on my way to work and (my wife) told me that a big tree had fallen on her van and she was crying when she called me,” said Zack Rodriguez.

A church spokesperson says it was a “historic” monkeypod tree that uprooted and there was no indication that anything was wrong with the tree.

Thorp said the cars belonged to the residence’s staff members and health care center.

“They’re emotionally shaken of course, but at this point right now, they’re okay,” Thorp said. “I think it’s all up to insurances now and working with Christian Science Church and the insurances and I’m sure we’ll be able to resolve all of the issues going forward.”

Those affected are being provided with rental cars while their vehicles are repaired.
