Hawaii Red Cross honors its Heroes of the Year

Local News

The Hawaii State Chapter of the American Red Cross honored their Heroes of the Year during a breakfast Saturday at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa.

Its community heroes included members of the Coast Guard Nicholas Garcia, Jeremy W. Carroll and Dion Couch.

Chelsey Anne Dungca was recognized as Youth Hero for her saving a boy from drowning in an Ewa community pool last July, and a dog named Daniel was honored for being an Animal Hero for his participation in the Red Cross Human Animal Bond Program at Tripler Army Medical Center.

Jan Kealoha, Kenneth Cutting, Phillip Fernandez, Rebecca King and Michele Molineaux were named Volunteers of the Year Heroes.

CEO Coralee Matayoshi said “these people are really humble, they don’t want attention called to them, but we wanted to show them that we appreciate them and how much we could not do without their help. About 96 percent of our work force is volunteers and this is a chance to show how much they mean to us and the state of Hawaii.”
