KHON2’s Wake Up 2day and Living808 present a special series from the Island of Hawaii. Taizo Braden went exploring and found the joys of a staycation on Hawaii’s largest island.

Kipuka Cottage in Volcano is a lush retreat, just under 4,000-feet elevation near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Owner Bill Harby designed the house in the late 1990s and had it built by a friend and carpenter who lives in Volcano. Harby says the design was inspired in part by Japanese pole houses going back to the 16th century.

Caretaker Jami Vezina says it offers an experience unlike most other Hawaiian getaways.

“If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the world, you come to Volcano. It’s dark, it’s beautiful, it’s chilly. You can wrap up in a blanket and read a good book,” she said.

Since the cottage opened to the public in 2010, it has hosted hundreds of guests.

“We’re usually about 75-percent booked — lots of couples, lots of honeymooners, one couple celebrating their 50th anniversary, singles on artistic and personal retreats, families just starting out,” said Vezina.Related Links:
